The Journey to Inclusion

My name is Jodie Wilde and I am the founder of Accomplish Inclusion. I am an experienced early childhood and primary teacher with a Masters in Inclusive Education and I am now completing a Master of Philosophy, researching how schools can foster positive autistic identity to improve the mental health and wellbeing of autistic students. I also have extensive lived-experience of neurodiversity and how barriers created by society can impact the lives of autistic and neurodivergent children and adults.

I'm extremely passionate about - and highly committed to - advocacy and activism, focusing on educational inclusion and disability justice. I am also an active LGBTQI+ ally and stand in solidarity with all marginalised and oppressed communities..

My own journey to inclusion began in 2018 when my older child was diagnosed with ADHD. Since then, my younger son and I have also received ADHD diagnoses, both children have been diagnosed as autistic and I am currently pursuing my own autism diagnosis. An important part of this journey has involved acknowledging my own misconceptions about disability, including autism and ADHD, and challenging the assumptions that underpin these.

When dis/ability is understood not as an individual deficit but as a different way of being in or experiencing the world  it becomes clear that many of the difficulties experienced by students with disability, including autistic and neurodivergent students, are the direct result of poorly designed environments, ableist expectations, and deficit-based approaches.  Understanding this has enabled me to become a powerful advocate, empowering me to question policies and practices and to push for change. It also prompted me to reflect on the challenges I've faced as a teacher and what support is needed to implement inclusive practices.

Systemic change is needed to end exclusionary and ableist practices and policies (including segregation and integration) and achieve genuine inclusion. It is my hope that I can help to accomplish this by providing advice, support, and resources to families and teachers as they work towards inclusion.
